About the Show

“This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.”

  • Played as a young adult male, a musician and poet, Orpheus is gifted and naïve. Guitar or other stringed instrument experience is a strong asset.

    Range D3-C5 (opt. Eb5)

  • Played as a young adult woman, Eurydice is a runaway, tough and vulnerable.

    Range F#3-D5

  • Played as an older immortal man, Hades is the compulsive industrialist, boss-king of Hadestown.

    Range: F2-C#4

  • Played as an immortal middle aged woman, Persephone is the Queen of nature and the seasons, the bitter First Lady of Hadestown.

    Range F3-C5

  • Played as a timeless immortal of any gender, Hermes is the charismatic guide and storyteller who is a mentor to Orpheus.

    Range: C3-B4

  • Played as three immortal women described as the vicious and delicious voices in your head, the fates help drive the story of Hadestown. Actor-Musicians who play the violin, accordian, and tambourine/ percussion are an asset.

    Ranges E3-D5 (Fate 1 up to Eb5)

  • Adapted into a chorus that sings in 4 part harmony, this group of performers are spirits of labor and community throughout the show, a crucial part of the Hadestown sound.
